2019 NBER-CCER Conference on China and the World Economy Held at the NSD

The annual NBER-CCER Conference on China and the World Economy jointly held by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the National School of Development (NSD) (Its predecessor is CCER) at Peking University took place at the NSD on May 23-24, 2019.


This year’s meeting consisted of seven sessions, respectively “Domestic and International Investment”, “Political Economy”, “Finance and Development”, “Public Finance”, “International Capital Flows”, “Health and Social Capital” and “Regulation and Trade”, attracting 25 experts and scholars at home and abroad, such as Professor Yao Yang, Dean of NSD and Director of China Center for Economic Research (CCER) at Peking University, Yu Miaojie, Deputy Dean of NSD. Some experts and scholars from NBER also participated in the academic exchange activity, including Professor James Poterba at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Professor Wei Shangjin at Columbia University, Professor Ray Fisman at Boston University (BU) and Professor Brent Neiman at University of Chicago.


The annual meeting kicked off on the morning of May 23, and Professor Yao Yang gave a warm welcome to the participants. He pointed out that the NBER-CCER Conference held for many years was a great academic tradition and played a significant role in promoting exchanges between Chinese economists and their US counterparts. Afterwards, he delivered a speech titled “Rebalance China’s Economy” , shedding light on Chinese economy in terms of investment, infrastructure construction, income distribution and macro economy.


Then Professor James Poterba, also the President of the NBER, gave his insights into American economy from the perspective of unemployment rate, labor force participation rate and GDP growth rate.


During the seven sessions in two days, attendees respectively shared their research achievements and opinions on relevant issues.


Finally, Professor James Poterba congratulated for a grand success of the conference, and expressed his deep expectation for next year’s meeting. Professor Yao extended his gratitude again to the experts and scholars from NBER, and meanwhile wished CCER could further enhance cooperation and exchanges with NBER, in a hope of letting the world know China and letting China go to the world.
